DPS plans to draw lots for nursery admissions</TD></TR>
<TR>
<TD>
By Ritika Chopra in New Delhi</TD></TR>
<TR>
<TD>
THE Right to Education ( RTE) Act may, after all, change the way nursery admissions are conducted across Delhi and its satellite towns.
The first signs of this possibility surfaced on Monday as Delhi Public School ( DPS) in Gurgaon ( Sector 45) changed its criteria and announced that nursery admissions will be conducted through a lottery.
A notice on the school website said there would be no “ screening of children or parents” and that the draw of lots will be done “ in full view of the applicants” on September 24.
The decision has been taken in the wake of the RTE Act coming into effect from April 1.
DPS Gurgaon had started selling admission forms on August 2. Several children had been selected on the basis of the interaction that was scheduled after that.
RTE guidelines, however, say no child shall be put through a screening process during admission. Contradicting the provisions, the school had interviewed candidates.
Hence the decision to adopt a new admission criterion.
Aditi Misra, principal of the school which has 200 nursery seats on offer this year, said: “ Since the Act does not allow screening, we decided to go for the lottery system which can ensure transparency. Even those who had already been selected in the old system will go through the draw now.” Under the lottery system, children do not have to meet criterion such as distance from school or if he/ she has a sibling in the institution — as is done in schools in the Capital.
A few Gurgaon schools — Heritage School and Shikshantar School — have been selecting children through lottery in recent years. “ The system is advantageous to parents. It is they who choose us and not the other way around,” said Shibani Kapur, a teacher at Heritage.
&nbsp;
<strong>Parents are, however, divided. “ Now my child’s admission is dependent on luck,” said Swati Sharma, who had applied for her daughter’s admission to the school and is a member of</strong><strong>&nbsp;F******.</strong><strong>com , a site to help parents cope with the admission grind.</strong></TD></TR></T></TABLE></TD></TR></T></TABLE></DIV>
